Dr Mark Scott is a Senior Clinical Scientist and Principal Investigator at the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London, within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He directs the internationally renowned GI Physiology Unit (Colorectal Service) at Barts Health NHS Trust, overseeing approximately 500 annual patient diagnostic investigations. With over 30 years of clinical and academic expertise, Dr Scott specializes in functional colorectal disorders including constipation and faecal incontinence, and is recognized as the UK's most widely published colorectal GI physiologist.
His research program focuses on visceral hyposensitivity mechanisms, colonic motor function assessment, and development of novel investigative technologies such as ingestible telemetric devices and high-resolution manometry. Dr Scott evaluates innovative therapeutic approaches for bowel dysfunction while contributing to European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility guidelines. His work emphasizes translating physiological insights into improved diagnostic protocols and patient management strategies for gastrointestinal motility disorders.
Analysis of Dr Scott's extensive publication record reveals a strong trend toward standardizing anorectal function diagnostics through the London Classification framework and International Anorectal Physiology Working Group. Recent work integrates multimodal assessments (MRI, manometry, patient-reported outcomes) to redefine constipation subtypes and explore dietary interventions, neuromodulation, and novel pharmacotherapies. This evolving research trajectory demonstrates increasing emphasis on personalized medicine approaches for functional gastrointestinal disorders.
Dr Scott has successfully supervised numerous postgraduate students to completion of PhD, MD[Res], and MSc degrees. He currently mentors Gursharan Nandhra (part-time PhD) and Mary Venn (PhD). His leadership extends to founding the Neurogastroenterology Group at Queen Mary and co-leading the International Anorectal Physiology Working Group, driving global standardization of diagnostic testing protocols while maintaining the GI Physiology Unit as a premier clinical research facility.
