Dr. Mark Rosenberg is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Development Studies at Queen’s University’s Department of Geography and Planning. He holds adjunct roles, including Adjunct Professor at the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health. His career includes teaching at UCLA, University of Ottawa, and Carleton University, alongside research roles in policy and demography.
Education: B.A. Honours (Geography, University of Toronto, 1975), M.Sc. (Geography, London School of Economics, 1976), Ph.D. (LSE, 1980).
Research focuses on aging populations, demographic trends, health geography, and Indigenous health. Notable projects include SSHRC-funded studies on Canada’s aging population (SEDAP I & II) and CIHR-funded research on age-friendly communities. Current projects explore Indigenous opportunities, rural healthcare, and social deprivation’s impact on aging in Canada and China.
Awards include the 2012 Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal and recognition for graduate supervision. He leads the Geographies of Aging Laboratory (GAPLab) and holds editorial roles in journals like Canadian Public Policy and Health and Place.
Professional roles include past leadership in international organizations such as the International Geographic Union and the Canadian Federation of Demographers. He advises global initiatives like the Earth System Science Partnership on Global Environmental Change and Human Health.
