Mark Richard is a Professor of Philosophy at Harvard University and the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Philosophy since 2013. He previously held the Lenore Stern Professorship in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Tufts University. His research spans philosophy of language, social philosophy, philosophical logic, metaphysics, and epistemology, with recent focus on gender, racial, and religious identities, and their social construction.
Education: Hamilton College, University of Freiburg (Germany), University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is a member of the Climate Working Group in his department.
Research Interests: Foundations of semantics, relativism, expressivism, vagueness, and social identity theories. His work includes books like Meanings as Species (2019), When Truth Gives Out (2008), and edited volumes on contextual semantics. Current projects explore the nature of social identities and how they are policed and transformed.
Professional Activities: Active in academic service, including graduate program leadership and climate initiatives. Personal interests include hiking, culinary arts, and woodwork.
