Mark R. Baltin is a Professor of Linguistics at New York University. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1978), an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania (1975), and a B.A. from McGill University (1971).
His research focuses on syntax, particularly its interface with semantics, elliptical constructions in English, and syntactic aspects of lexical representation. He has extended his work to comparative syntax across languages and predication theory.
His publications analyze topics such as remnant movement, ellipsis, binding theory, and phrase structure, with key contributions to syntactic derivation and information structure. Trends include the interaction of ellipsis and binding, extraposition constraints, and theoretical debates on movement rules.
Scientific awards include multiple National Science Foundation grants for collaborative research, workshops, and studies on syntactic theory.
