Mark Nugent

Mark Nugent is an Associate Teaching Professor and Graduate Advisor in the Department of Greek and Roman Studies at the University of Victoria. He holds a PhD from the University of Washington and specializes in Greek and Latin language pedagogy, Imperial Greek literature, and the reception of classical themes in modern media. His research focuses on gender/sexuality in ancient cultures and their representation in historical fiction/film.

Recent academic achievements include supervising Allie MacIlroy’s award-winning thesis on physical gender atypicality in Imperial Roman men. He regularly teaches advanced Greek/Latin courses and popular interdisciplinary subjects like 'Ancient World on Film' and 'Love, Sex, and the Body in Antiquity.'

Current projects include an Introductory Latin Reader, and articles analyzing colonial narratives in classical adaptations, queer pedagogy, and historical controversies in classical literature.

His work bridges ancient and modern cultures through critical analysis of classical receptions, with a focus on marginalized identities and transformative reinterpretations of classical texts.
