Mark Lee is a Professor of Physics at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), affiliated with the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He holds dual roles as Professor and Research Professor at UTD since 2010. Previously, he served as a Principal Member of Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories (2003–2010) and held academic positions at the University of Virginia (1992–2001). His research focuses on experimental solid-state physics, materials physics, and terahertz technology, emphasizing quantum effects in novel materials and nanoscale devices.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University (1991), and dual B.A. and M.S. in Physics from Harvard University (1986). He has authored numerous publications in high-impact journals like Nature Photonics and Applied Physics Letters, with a focus on terahertz detectors, quantum cascade lasers, and nanomaterial characterization.
Professional recognition includes Fellow of the American Physical Society (2005), the Sandia Research Recognition Award (2005), and National Science Foundation awards (1996). He chairs committees for the American Physical Society and has overseen six PhD students, two current, and multiple postdoctoral researchers. Teaching spans courses in modern physics, thermodynamics, and solid-state physics at UTD and UVA.
His lab develops advanced measurement techniques for AC conductance, dielectric functions, and nonlinear responses at cryogenic temperatures and high magnetic fields. Notable projects include integrated terahertz transceivers and terahertz plasmon detectors, with over 10 patents in optoelectronics and nanotechnology.
