Dr Mark Lawrence is a Senior Lecturer in Military History at the University of Kent’s School of History. He joined in 2015 and specializes in European, Spanish, and Mexican military history, with a focus on civil wars, guerrilla warfare, and transnational conflicts. He previously held positions at the University of Liverpool, University of Sheffield, Newcastle University, and a visiting role at the Universidad de Zacatecas. His research emphasizes war and society dynamics, particularly in 19th-century Spain and Mexico.
Lawrence’s work includes award-winning publications like Spanish Civil Wars (2017) and Fighting Cristeros (2020). He edits the journal Small Wars and Insurgencies and leads the Centre for the History of War, Media and Society. His grants include funding from the Royal Historical Society and a Santander Mobility Grant.
Research interests span Spanish Carlist Wars, Mexico’s Cristero uprising, Napoleonic-era conflicts, and global guerrilla strategies. He actively engages with public audiences through documentaries (e.g., a film on Mexico’s Cristero Wars) and media appearances, including RTVE’s La Historia de Cada Día.
He supervises postgraduate students exploring modern European, Spanish, and Mexican military history, particularly topics intersecting war, religion, and society. His recent publications analyze religious violence in Mexico, 19th-century insurgency tactics, and transatlantic military careers.
