Mark L. Palmeri is a Professor at Duke University, affiliated with the Pratt School of Engineering and School of Medicine. He holds dual appointments in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Anesthesiology. His research focuses on ultrasonic imaging and acoustic radiation force for characterizing tissue mechanical properties, with applications in prostate cancer detection, liver fibrosis, and skeletal muscle elasticity.
Education:
- B.S.E. in Biomedical & Electrical Engineering, Duke University (2000)
- Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Duke University (2005)
- M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine (2007)
Dr. Palmeri has pioneered acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) and shear wave elasticity imaging (SWEI) techniques. His work spans finite element modeling, deep learning, and medical device design. Recent publications highlight advancements in 3D SWEI algorithms, viscoelastic parameter estimation, and AI-driven ultrasound enhancement.
Scientific Awards:
- Lois and John L. Imhoff Distinguished Teaching Award (2017, 2012)
- Certificate for Excellence in Teaching (2015)
- Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching (2018)
- James B. Duke Graduate Fellowship (2002)
He serves as Associate Editor for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology and contributes to the RSNA QIBA committee. His teaching includes courses on medical device prototyping and graduate independent study.
