Mark L. Green is a Distinguished Research Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles. He serves as Director Emeritus of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) and Special Advisor for Strategic Initiatives in Data Science to the Vice-Chancellor for Research. Green co-founded IPAM, a national research institute fostering interactions between mathematical sciences and other disciplines, and plays a key leadership role in UCLA's DataX Initiative.
His research spans algebraic geometry and mathematical sciences, with significant contributions to data science education. Green pioneered undergraduate machine learning courses in 2009 and helped establish the joint Data Theory major between Mathematics and Statistics. He co-created the graduate course 'Machine Learning for Social Science' and has been instrumental in developing honors mathematics sequences and diversity programs like the Math and Science Scholars (MS^2).
