Mark Kaemingk is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of North Dakota. He specializes in aquatic ecology, focusing on spatiotemporal dynamics and social-ecological systems within recreational fisheries. His research integrates ecological and human dimensions to address challenges in fisheries management and conservation.
Education: Mark holds a Ph.D. in Fisheries Sciences (South Dakota State University), M.S. in Conservation Biology (Central Michigan University), and B.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences (South Dakota State University). He completed a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship at Victoria University in New Zealand before joining UND.
Research Interests: His work explores interactions between fish communities, angler behavior, and environmental changes. Key areas include invasive species prevention, climate change impacts, and spatial/temporal patterns in aquatic ecosystems. The UNDerwater Lab employs interdisciplinary methods to address these topics across diverse systems like rivers, lakes, and marine environments.
Key Contributions: His publications emphasize angler behavior, regulatory effectiveness, and ecosystem resilience. Notable work includes analyses of water-level impacts on angling effort and the role of ecosystem size in managing recreational use.
Awards: Recipient of the NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biology (2019).
Teaching: Instructs courses such as Ichthyology, Aquatic Ecology, and Human Dimensions of Fisheries Management, reflecting his commitment to bridging science and practical application.
Lab/Labs: Leads the UNDerwater Lab, which focuses on innovative solutions for complex ecological and social challenges in aquatic systems.
