Dr. Mark Johnson is a Clinical Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Department of Neurology, affiliated with the Cerebrovascular Diseases and Stroke Section. He joined UT Southwestern in 1998 and has held multiple leadership roles, including Medical Director of the Cerebrovascular Diseases and Stroke Comprehensive Stroke Center and Section Chief. His clinical interests focus on acute stroke care, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, and vascular neurology. He has contributed to groundbreaking research on stroke mechanisms, including transcranial Doppler applications and endovascular interventions.
Dr. Johnson has twice received the Trephined Cranium Award for teaching excellence from the UTSW Department of Neurology. His research spans clinical trials like SAMMPRIS and RHAPSODY, investigating stenting, antiplatelet therapies, and thrombectomy techniques. He actively participates in medical student and resident training, previously serving as Fellowship Director for Vascular Neurology.
His work bridges clinical practice and innovation, addressing stroke prevention, vascular anatomy, and outcomes. Key contributions include studies on intracranial atherosclerosis, aneurysms, and post-radiation vasculopathy. He collaborates across disciplines in cardiology, hematology, and neurosurgery to advance cerebrovascular care.
