Dr. Mark J. McLaughlin is an Associate Professor of History and Canadian Studies at the University of Maine, serving as Graduate Coordinator. He specializes in environmental and Canadian history, focusing on forestry, natural resource management, and the evolution of ecological science in the mid-20th century. His work explores how government scientists shifted identities from resource specialists to ecologists, and how the state uses media like comics for environmental messaging. Recent research includes a book project on New Brunswick's forestry modernization and publications on environmental education through Canadian comics and pulp industry history.
His research interests span contested resource use, state mediation, and the intersection of science and public policy. He has published in Material Culture Review, Forestry Chronicle, and Acadiensis, with edited contributions on environmental organizations and resource-dependent provinces.
