Mark Horvit is a Professor at the University of Missouri Missouri School of Journalism, where he chairs the Journalism Professions faculty group. He teaches investigative reporting and directs the State Government Reporting Program, which connects student-powered newsrooms across more than a dozen states to explore legislative trends. Horvit previously served as executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) and the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting (NICAR), conducting global training in data journalism.
His research and professional interests focus on investigative reporting, data journalism, and ethical rigor in journalism education. He has pioneered initiatives like the Statehouse Reporting Project, funded by a $250,000+ Arnold Ventures grant, and the Missouri News Network, which unifies the school’s five professional newsrooms.
