Mark Heller is a Professor of Philosophy at Syracuse University's College of Arts & Sciences. His work focuses on ontology, free will, modality, conventionalism, and impossibilism. He earned his Ph.D. from Syracuse University (1984) and a B.A. from Whitman College (1978), studying under notable philosophers like William Alston and Peter van Inwagen.
Teaching: Recent courses include PHI 251 Logic, PHI 383 Free Will, PHI 840 Seminar in Metaphysics, and PHI 385 Personal Identity. He frequently supervises independent studies (PHI 690).
Research: Heller’s seminal work The Ontology of Physical Objects: Four-Dimensional Hunks of Matter (1990) argues for four-dimensionalist ontology. Current interests include metaphysical puzzles from personal identity to divine omnipotence.
Service: Served as Department Chair (2025-2026). His academic trajectory includes teaching positions at institutions in Vermont, Illinois, Philadelphia, and Dallas before returning to Syracuse in 2004.
