Dr. Mark Hammer is a Professor in the Department of Life Sciences at Wayne State College. He serves as the director of the A. Jewell Schock Natural History Museum and advises students pursuing careers in conservation biology, physician assistant, or occupational therapy. His academic background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville (1992), an M.S. from Clemson University (1985), and a B.S. from Iowa State University (1983).

His research focuses on prairie plant reproduction, seed dispersal mechanisms, and prairie ecology. He also teaches courses in biology concepts, plant science, and medical terminology. Dr. Hammer has secured multiple grants, including National Science Foundation funding for laboratory improvements, Nebraska Environmental Trust support for wetland education, and state wildlife grants for prairie restoration projects.
He previously served as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and held leadership roles in the Nebraska Native Plant Society and The Wildlife Society’s Nebraska chapter.
