Mark Floryan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on leveraging student data to develop intelligent educational systems, with interests in Serious Games, Gamification for Education, and Computer Science Education. He received his Ph.D. in 2013 from the University of Massachusetts.
Recent contributions include the AI-Smart Classroom Initiative (2025), exploring efficient student help groups via cosine similarity (2024), and gamification models for digital health (2020). His work spans educational technology, AI applications in learning environments, and behavioral analysis in educational contexts.
Floryan is actively engaged in academic service, serving as Treasurer of the SIGCSE Technical Symposium Organizing Committee (2024–2027). He advises students on projects such as the ICPC World Finals team (2024) and contributed to a white paper on computing faculty hiring practices (2024). His research emphasizes bridging educational theory and practice through technology-driven innovations.
