Mark Finnane is Distinguished Professor of History at Griffith University's School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science and an ARC Laureate Fellow. He directs the Prosecution Project and Harry Gentle Resource Centre, bringing expertise in historical criminology, policing, and colonial justice systems.
Finnane's research examines historical patterns of violence, prosecution mechanisms, and criminal justice transformations across Australian history. His recent work focuses on colonial genocide, death penalty politics, and Indigenous experiences within legal frameworks.
His publications demonstrate sustained investigation into prosecution data, legal archives, and colonial records to understand institutional responses to crime and disorder. Research themes consistently address power asymmetries in justice administration.
Honours include fellowships in both the Australian Academy of Humanities and Academy of Social Sciences.
