Dr Mark Coen is an Associate Professor at the Sutherland School of Law, University College Dublin, specializing in criminal justice, evidence law, and historical legal systems. He holds an LL.B from Trinity College Dublin, a BCL from Oxford University, and a Ph.D. in Law. His research focuses on jury trials, judicial behavior, and historical injustices like the Donnybrook Magdalene Laundry.
Research interests include:
- Public law and criminal justice systems
- Historical analysis of jury trials and evidence law
- Gender dimensions in legal history
Major awards include the UCD Engaged Research Impact Prize (2024) for reframing historical narratives of institutional abuses. He co-leads the 'Judge-Jury Relations in Ireland' project funded by the Fitzpatrick Family Foundation.
Teaching includes seminar modules on jury systems and evidence law. He mentors PhD students in criminal justice topics and sits on UCD's Academic Council.
