Mark Coeckelbergh is a Professor of Philosophy of Media and Technology at the University of Vienna and ERA Chair at the Institute of Philosophy, Czech Academy of Sciences. He also serves as Guest Professor at Uppsala University through WASP-HS, following his tenure as Vice Dean of Vienna's Faculty of Philosophy and Education and presidency of the Society for Philosophy and Technology.
His research specializes in technology ethics, particularly AI and robotics governance, reflected in seventeen books including AI Ethics (2020) and Digital Technologies, Temporality, and the Politics of Co-Existence (2023). He examines ethical frameworks, political implications, and societal impacts of emerging digital systems through philosophical and policy-oriented lenses.
Coeckelbergh actively shapes technology policy as a member of the EU High Level Expert Group on AI, Austrian Robotics Council, and Automated Mobility Advisory Council. He leads the CETE-P research initiative at the Czech Academy of Sciences and participates in multiple European and national AI/robotics projects, directing teams of researchers across institutions.
