Mark Chiang

Mark Chiang, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Division of Hematology-Oncology within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. He is affiliated with the University of Michigan Cancer Center and leads a translational research laboratory focused on T-cell leukemia and thymic regeneration.

Research Interests: Dr. Chiang's lab investigates the transcriptional networks that drive T-cell leukemogenesis and thymic regeneration. His team uses genetically engineered mouse models, patient-derived xenografts, and cutting-edge genomic and proteomic techniques to study how transcription factors and cofactors—particularly Notch1 and its partners like ZMIZ1 and ETS1—regulate oncogenesis and T-cell development. The overarching goal is to identify safer, targeted therapies for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) and to enhance T-cell immunity after chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation.

Scientific Contributions: Dr. Chiang has published extensively on Notch signaling, enhancer biology, and leukemia stem cell networks. His recent work includes identifying a shared stem cell transcriptional circuit in high-risk ETP leukemia and elucidating how cofactors like ZMIZ1 modulate Notch1 activity in cancer and development.

Lab Team & Mentorship: Dr. Chiang leads a diverse team of trainees including PhD students, MSTP students, postdocs, and undergraduates. He emphasizes personalized mentorship and DEI principles in training the next generation of biomedical scientists. The lab is currently recruiting new trainees.
