Mark Caprio is a Professor of Physics & Astronomy and former Associate Chair/Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on nuclear structure theory, including collective phenomena, ab initio methods, and quantum phase transitions. He earned a B.S. in Physics & Mathematics from Oglethorpe University (1994), followed by M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. (2003) from Yale University under Richard Casten. His doctoral work examined transitional nuclei using experimental and theoretical approaches, contributing to models like E(5) and X(5).
Caprio’s theoretical work bridges microscopic and macroscopic descriptions of nuclei, employing Lie algebraic methods and interacting boson models. He investigates emergent symmetries (e.g., Sp(3,R)) and computational techniques to address collective properties. His honors include teaching awards (2014 Joyce Award, 2017 Shilts/Leonard) and the 2023 Burns Award. Collaborative projects include ab initio predictions of nuclear observables and phase transition dynamics in quantum systems.
His research integrates experimental data (e.g., gamma-ray spectroscopy) with computational frameworks, advancing understanding of deformation, clustering, and rotational behavior in nuclei.
