Professor Mark Brouard is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oxford and a Fellow and Tutor in Chemistry at Jesus College. He previously served as Head of the Chemistry Department from 2015 to 2023. His academic background includes a DPhil from Linacre College, Oxford, under Professor M.J. Pilling. Brouard’s research focuses on molecular reaction dynamics, femtochemistry, and imaging mass spectrometry. He has pioneered techniques such as velocity-map ion imaging and covariance analysis to study chemical reactions and molecular collisions. Notable contributions include investigations into quantum interference in molecular scattering and ultrafast dynamics of molecules using femtosecond lasers.
His research group, the Brouard Group, explores the dynamics of chemical reactions, photodissociation, and structural analysis using advanced imaging methods like the PImMS camera. Brouard has been recognized with the Chemical Dynamics Award from the RSC and has authored numerous high-impact publications. His work bridges experimental and theoretical chemistry, emphasizing real-time molecular imaging and quantum-state resolved detection. Current projects include developing high-throughput imaging mass spectrometry and studying femtosecond-scale structural changes in chiral molecules.
Academic roles include Vice-Principal at Jesus College and leadership in undergraduate physical chemistry teaching. His research group’s achievements span laser pump-probe spectroscopy, Coulomb explosion imaging, and the structural analysis of complex molecules, with applications in materials science and biological systems.
