Mark Bradley is a Professor in the Department of Physics at Colorado State University (CSU), part of the College of Natural Sciences. He holds a B.S. from the University of Toronto (1979) and a Ph.D. from Stanford University (1985). His research focuses on the theory of nanoscale pattern formation induced by ion bombardment of solid surfaces, including ripple dynamics, nanodot arrays, and sputter cone formation. Bradley collaborates closely with experimentalists, using computational modeling and simulations to study surface instabilities and compositional effects.
His work has led to groundbreaking theories such as the Bradley-Harper model for ripple formation and the explanation of hexagonal nanodot arrays via surface composition coupling. Recent projects include NSF-funded studies on multilayer blazed gratings and nanopatterning of crystalline Ge surfaces. Bradley has advised numerous graduate and undergraduate students, many of whom have pursued advanced degrees at top institutions like UC Davis and Caltech.
Bradley’s research also explores sputter yield dynamics, ion-solid interactions, and the mathematical theory of pattern formation in nonequilibrium systems. His group’s findings have been featured in prominent journals like Physical Review Letters and Journal of Applied Physics, with over 1,100 citations for his seminal 1988 paper on ripple topography. He has delivered plenary talks at international conferences and served as an editor for Nanophysics in Open Physics.
Labs/Teams: Bradley leads the Bradley Group at CSU, a multidisciplinary team combining theoretical physics, computational modeling, and experimental collaboration. Key ongoing projects include optimizing nanopattern quality via ion beam rocking and investigating morphological transitions in binary compounds.
