Mark Bisschops

Dr. Ir. Mark Bisschops is an Assistant Professor at the Bioprocess Engineering group of Wageningen University & Research (WUR), with expertise in microbial biotechnology, synthetic biology, and precision fermentation. His research focuses on uncoupling microbial growth from product formation, emphasizing metabolic energetics and maintenance energy requirements.

• Key Expertise: Yeast physiology, industrial microbiology, recombinant protein production, and application of CRISPR/Cas techniques.
• Research Highlights: Explored yeast responses to zero growth rates, studied heterologous protein production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and investigated cellular energetics in aging yeast models for neurodegenerative diseases.
• Projects: Includes process development for precision fermentation of milk proteins, optimizing protein recovery from yeast, and modifying yeast stress responses for industrial applications.

He received a VENI grant in 2017 for his work on aging yeast cells as models for neurodegenerative diseases. Prior to WUR, he conducted postdoctoral research at Chalmers University of Technology and Delft University of Technology.
