Mark Bayfield is a Full Professor in the Department of Biology at York University, affiliated with the Faculty of Science. He leads the Bayfield Lab, which focuses on RNA biology, particularly RNA processing, folding, modifications, and RNA-binding proteins. His research centers on the La antigen and related proteins, exploring their roles in RNA metabolism conservation across species and implications for human health. The lab uses yeast and human cell models, employing techniques in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, microbial genetics, and fluorescence microscopy.
His academic roles include supervising the Biology Graduate Program and advising numerous graduate and undergraduate students. The lab is located in the Life Sciences Building (Room 327E), with contact details available via email and phone. Research highlights include studies on tRNA maturation, La protein trafficking, and the KEOPS complex's role in tRNA modification. Recent work investigates La-related proteins' contributions to gene regulation and disease mechanisms, with publications in high-impact journals like Nature Communications and Nucleic Acids Research.
