Mark Arends is a Professor of Pathology at the University of Edinburgh, affiliated with the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, the MRC Institute of Genetics & Molecular Medicine, and the Cancer Research UK Edinburgh Centre. He serves as Head of the Division of Pathology and Co-director of the Centre for Comparative Pathology. His research focuses on genomic, genetic, and epigenetic mechanisms in colorectal and gynaecological cancers, with emphasis on inherited susceptibility and in vivo tumor models.
- Education: MBChB and BSc in Pathology (University of Edinburgh), PhD in Pathology
- Previous Position: University Reader in Histopathology at University of Cambridge (1999-2013)
- Key Collaborators: Dr. David Adams (Sanger Institute), Dr. Ketan Patel (MRC LMB), Professor Malcolm Dunlop (University of Edinburgh)
Research interests include:
- Identification of novel cancer genes (BRUNOL4, PARK2, IRS2, SLX4/FANCP)
- Alcohol-induced DNA damage and repair pathways
- Epigenetic silencing in the WNT/APC/B-CATENIN pathway
- Inflammatory bowel disease-colorectal cancer progression
- Role of chromosomal instability and mismatch repair
Recent publications highlight his work in:
- PI3K/AKT pathway alterations in hidradenoma papilliferum
- IDH1/IDH2 mutations and hypermethylation in colorectal cancer
- Wnt/β-catenin signaling in salivary gland tumors
- Eicosanoid-immune-microbiota axis in intestinal inflammation
- 3D human reference atlas construction for tissue mapping
His laboratory employs advanced technologies including genomic sequencing, digital pathology (QuPath, Definiens), immunohistochemistry, and in vivo models to study cancer mechanisms.
