Mark Alznauer is an Associate Professor at Northwestern University, with affiliations in the Department of German and Department of Religious Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Social Thought from the University of Chicago (2008) and a B.A. from St. John’s College (2000).
His research focuses on nineteenth-century German philosophy, particularly G.W.F. Hegel, with interests in metaphysics, social theory, aesthetics, and pragmatist critiques of rationalism. He has authored Hegel’s Theory of Responsibility (Cambridge, 2015) and co-edited Theories of Action and Morality (2016). His recent projects include a manuscript Hegel’s Sole Idea and interdisciplinary work on Weber’s value-freedom and historical materialism.
Alznauer teaches courses such as Post-Kantian Ethics, Existentialism, and German Aesthetics, and is currently President of the Hegel Society of America (2024-26). In 2023, he received the Journal of the History of Philosophy Article Prize for his work on Hegel’s Logic and was recognized in the Philosopher’s Annual as a top paper in philosophy.
