Mark A. Travassos is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He specializes in pediatric infectious diseases and is a prominent member of the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health's Malaria Research Program. Dr. Travassos co-directs the Immunoepidemiology and Pathogenesis Unit and serves as Director of the Global Health Track for the Pediatrics Residency Program, demonstrating significant leadership in both research and medical education.
His educational background includes an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an MSc in Biology from the University of Oxford, and an M.D. from Cornell University Medical College. He completed his pediatric residency at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital with a focus on International Health and a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Tropical Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Dr. Travassos' research primarily focuses on malaria pathogenesis and epidemiology, with special emphasis on cerebral malaria and other forms of severe malaria. His work examines malaria parasite variant surface antigens and their contribution to cerebral malaria development, investigates how sickle cell trait provides protection against malaria illness, and studies the development of natural protective immunity in malaria-endemic regions. He also conducts important research in Ethiopia assessing vaccine coverage through serosurveys, bridging laboratory science with practical public health applications.
Analysis of his extensive publication record reveals consistent focus on malaria immunology, particularly concerning variant surface antigens (RIFINs, STEVORs, and PfEMP1s), mechanisms of severe disease, and population-level immunity patterns.
