Marja Åkerström is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Communication, Lund University, Campus Helsingborg, and an affiliated researcher at CIRCLE. She holds a PhD in Media and Communication Studies with research focusing on strategic communication, political communication, digital media, and democracy.
Her research interests include organizational communication, crisis communication, environmental communication, and the interplay between traditional and digital media. She has led studies on Digital Naturals and opinion formation in digital communities.
Publications explore democratic practices in post-truth societies, trauma understanding across disciplines, and innovative communication strategies in public organizations. Research themes center on civic engagement, organizational adaptation, and digital transformation.
She supervises bachelor and master theses and participates in research networks including POLCOM@LU (political communication) and CIOS (public sector innovation). She also leads campus initiatives on equality and diversity.
