Marja Palmroth is a University Lecturer at Tampere University in the Department of Materials Science and Environmental Engineering. She holds a Doctor of Engineering (2006) and B.Sc. (1998) in Environmental Engineering. Her research focuses on environmental biotechnology, waste management, and sustainable development, particularly in wastewater treatment, landfill mining, and microbial processes. She has supervised multiple theses at Tampere University of Applied Sciences, including works on biofilter method development and atomic absorption spectrometry improvements.
Her recent work addresses virus detection in wastewater systems, denitrification under stress conditions, and optimization of infrastructure processes. She actively participates in academic activities such as conference organization (e.g., Nordic Drinking Water Conference 2026), journal peer review, and doctoral dissertation evaluations. Her research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water, sustainable cities, and responsible consumption.
Key technical areas include microbial ecology, composite sampling methods, and bioremediation strategies for contaminated soils and industrial waste streams. Her publications span environmental engineering, microbiology, and chemical engineering disciplines, emphasizing practical solutions for ecological challenges.
