Mariusz Burdek

Mariusz Burdek is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Sculpture and Intermedia, Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts. Born in 1985, he graduated from Antoni Kenar High School in Zakopane and earned his Sculpture diploma from Gdańsk Academy in 2010 under Prof. Sławoj Ostrowski. He currently works in Prof. Mariusz Białecki’s diploma studio, focusing on conceptual sculpture exploring human existence, social relations, and the interplay between physical/spiritual spaces.

His research investigates the ‘SELF’ in impersonal environments, using everyday objects imbued with symbolic meaning. He creates installations and sculptures that challenge audience engagement through material experimentation—wood, metal, epoxy, and sound. Notable works include Autoportret (2020), Obiekt lustrzany (2020), and Epitafium (2018).

Burdek actively participates in international symposia and has exhibited widely in solo/group shows. While no academic awards are noted, his practice emphasizes ideological beauty over aesthetics, blending philosophy with material innovation. Collaborations like Duchy Żuławskie (2014) showcase his interest in collective memory and regional identity.
