Dr. Marisa Segal serves as a University Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge. She leads an active research group focused on molecular mechanisms governing asymmetric cell division, with primary affiliation to the Downing Street campus in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Her research centers on cell cycle controls at the interface between mitotic spindle morphogenesis and cell polarity, primarily using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model system. Key interests include cyclin-dependent kinase regulation, spindle pole body asymmetry, cortical capture of astral microtubules, and the molecular basis of spindle orientation during asymmetric division. Her work demonstrates remarkable parallels between unicellular yeast models and animal stem cell behavior.
Dr. Segal's laboratory investigates two core mechanisms: 1) CDK-mediated temporal asymmetry limiting astral microtubules to old spindle pole bodies, and 2) Bud6p-dependent cortical programming for differential microtubule capture that commits old spindle poles to enter the bud while confining new poles to mother cells.
She actively supervises postgraduate students including Sneha Parmar and maintains research facilities at the Department of Genetics.
