Mario Sraka serves as an Associate Professor at the Department of Soil Science within the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb, where he has maintained continuous academic employment since 1991. His career progression includes roles as Expert Associate (1991-1992), Young Assistant (1992-1997), Assistant (1997-2003), Senior Assistant (2003-2006), Senior Teacher (2006-2009), and Assistant Professor (2009-2016) before his current appointment.
Dr. Sraka earned his B.Sc. (1986-1991), M.Sc. (1991-1996), and Ph.D. (1996-2003) in Agriculture from the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Agriculture. His doctoral research focused on lysimetric testing of soil water balance models, establishing the foundation for his expertise in soil-water dynamics.
His research concentrates on Soil Physics, Hydropedology, and Soil and Water Protection, with particular emphasis on soil-water interactions, erosion mechanisms, and sustainable land management practices. His work integrates field measurements, lysimeter studies, and hydrological modeling to address agricultural challenges in Croatian landscapes, especially concerning water scarcity and soil degradation.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications (2021-2025) reveals consistent focus on climate change impacts on soil moisture, land suitability assessment, irrigation management, and soil physical property dynamics. The research demonstrates methodological rigor through advanced lysimeter technologies and field measurements, with strong regional application in Croatian watersheds like the Drava and Sava river basins.
- Coordinated European Social Fund project (2020-2023) improving practical training in agricultural studies
- Led multiple University of Zagreb-funded research projects (2015-2017) on water protection in hydro-ameliorated agricultural areas
- Active member of Croatian Society of Soil Science (since 1992) and International Union of Soil Sciences (since 2010)
Dr. Sraka teaches core soil science courses at the Faculty of Agriculture including Soil Physics, Soil Quality and Protection, and Ameliorative Pedology, while also providing instruction at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Science and Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering. His office is located in room 120 of the 6th pavilion, with consultations held Tuesdays 12:00-13:00.
