Prof. Dr. Mario Schelhaas serves as Managing Director of the Associated Institute of Cellular Virology at the University of Münster's Center for Molecular Biology of Inflammation (ZMBE). His research program focuses on the molecular mechanisms of virus-host interactions during early infection stages, with particular emphasis on human papillomaviruses (HPVs). As a supervisor in the CiM-IMPRS Graduate Programme and member of the Imaging Network, he contributes significantly to interdisciplinary research and training initiatives at the university.
Dr. Schelhaas's laboratory investigates the complete viral entry pathway, from initial attachment through endocytic uptake, intracellular transport, and nuclear delivery of viral genomes. His research reveals how viruses hijack cellular processes including signaling pathways, membrane trafficking, and nuclear import systems. This work advances understanding of viral pathogenesis while simultaneously providing insights into fundamental cell biological processes, particularly endocytosis and membrane dynamics.
His publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to understanding HPV entry mechanisms, with recent work focusing on glycan interactions, capsid structural dynamics, nuclear entry pathways, and host cell factors in viral infection. The research bridges basic cell biology with translational applications for combating viral diseases, including the development of novel antiviral strategies targeting viral entry mechanisms. Dr. Schelhaas employs a multidisciplinary approach combining cellular and molecular biology techniques with advanced live-cell imaging, single-particle tracking, and systems biology methodologies to unravel these complex processes.
