Mario Rosario Buffelli is a Full Professor of Physiology at the University of Verona, affiliated with the Department of Neurosciences, Biomedicine and Movement Sciences. He serves as Director of the Cellular Neurophysiology and Neurobiology Laboratory and the CIRSAL Interdepartmental Centre. His roles include membership in academic committees such as the Faculty Board of the PhD in Neuroscience and the Council for the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery.
Research focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal plasticity in neurological disorders, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and autism. Key areas include glial cell interactions (microglia/astrocytes), synaptic formation, and neurodegenerative pathways. He leads projects funded by Italian Ministry grants (PRIN) and collaborates with WHO’s Mental Health Research Centre.
Teaches physiology across undergraduate and graduate programs including Medicine, Physiotherapy, and Biotechnology. Engages in continuous education through Terza Missione initiatives and supervises research training (e.g., PhD and specialization programs in Neurosurgery, Nephrology).
Labs associated include Neurobiology, Neurophysiology, and Rehabilitation centers. His work bridges basic science and clinical applications in neurodegenerative disease mechanisms and therapeutic strategies.
