Prof Mario I Aguilar is a Professor of Religion and Politics at the University of St Andrews' School of Divinity, serving as Director of the Centre for the Study of Religion and Politics. His research focuses on interreligious dialogue (Christian-Buddhist/Hindu), religion in non-Western contexts, and the intersection of theology with contemporary global issues like human rights and colonialism.
- Education: PhD and MA in Social Anthropology (SOAS, University of London), MA/STB in Theology (University of Leuven), BA in Philosophy (Chile).
- Research Interests: Hinduism/Buddhism history, theology of the poor, Christian-Hindu dialogue, Vatican diplomacy, and religious art in India.
Prof Aguilar has authored over 126 publications, including books on the Dalai Lama, Christian-Hindu dialogue, and Pope Francis' theology. His work bridges academic scholarship with policy impact, advising British courts on asylum cases from Africa and Latin America.
- Awards: Fellowships from Royal Anthropological Institute, Royal Asiatic Society, and recipient of the Adele Mellen Prize (2004).
- Grants: Leverhulme Trust-funded research on Chile's disappeared (1973-1980), projects on Tibetan Buddhism historiography, and studies on religion in Somaliland.
He leads initiatives on religion and politics in Kenya, India, and Rwanda, with future projects including a trilogy on Christian-Hindu dialogue and cooperative research in Coquimbo, Chile.
