Mario Bortolozzi is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physics and Astronomy "G. Galilei" at the University of Padova. He is also a Group Leader at the Venetian Institute of Molecular Medicine (VIMM) since 2013 and Scientific Coordinator of the PNC-SISMUR infrastructure for cellular imaging at VIMM since 2018.
Education:
- 2004: Master Degree in Physics, University of Padova.
- 2008: PhD in Neurobiology, Biosciences School, University of Padova.
His research combines expertise from Physics, Biology, and Medicine to investigate connexin function in intercellular signaling. Using advanced optical microscopy techniques (2-photon, STED, second/third harmonic generation), patch-clamp methods, and systems biology tools, his work addresses structural, chemical, and biological aspects of connexins, particularly their role in neurological disorders like X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT1X) and Parkinson's disease. Current projects explore molecular mechanisms underlying Cx32 mutations in CMT1X and GBA mutation penetrance in Parkinson's, aiming to bridge fundamental research with translational applications.
Labs and Teams:
As a Group Leader at VIMM, he coordinates cutting-edge research on connexin-related pathologies and leads the PNC-SISMUR infrastructure for cellular imaging, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between physics, biology, and medicine.
