Dr. Marino Labinaz is a Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at the University of Ottawa and Director of the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He holds dual fellowships: Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC). His career spans academic leadership, clinical practice, and pioneering research in interventional cardiology.
Education: Completed undergraduate and medical training at Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario), followed by Internal Medicine residency at the University of Western Ontario. Specialized in Cardiology training and a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Duke University Medical Center (Durham, NC).
Research Focus: Innovations in interventional cardiology, including intravascular ultrasound, percutaneous valve interventions, and outcomes in acute myocardial infarction. Co-developed a patented drug-delivery catheter (2003) with Dr. Edward O’Brien. Leads over 60 clinical trials, including roles as site principal investigator and co-investigator in multinational studies.
Grants & Awards: Peer-reviewed funding from the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Contributed to the Cardiac Care Network’s guidelines on primary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction in Ontario.
Labs/Teams: Founded Thunder Bay’s standalone interventional cardiology program, co-created the Heart Institute’s percutaneous aortic valve implantation program with Dr. Marc Ruel, and chairs key clinical panels.
