Marin H. Kollef

Marin H. Kollef is the Golman Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He has been a faculty member at Washington University since 1992, progressing from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor and ultimately to Professor of Medicine in 2005, where he remains actively engaged in research and clinical work.

Dr. Kollef's educational background includes an MD from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (1983), followed by residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at Madigan Army Medical Center. His career includes significant leadership roles including Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center from 1988-1992.

Dr. Kollef has developed the ICU into a research laboratory to investigate disease processes and patient outcomes, with particular focus on ventilator-associated pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive lung disease, and sepsis. His multidisciplinary research group has developed treatment strategies to prevent complications in the ICU and has collaborated with informatics groups to develop real-time early warning prediction algorithms for non-ICU hospitalized patients.

His recent publications (2020-2024) demonstrate continued leadership in critical care medicine, with emphasis on sepsis management, antibiotic stewardship, ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention, and innovative approaches to preventing clinical deterioration. Dr. Kollef has received numerous honors and awards throughout his career, including being selected for 'Best Doctors in America' since 1996, the Chest Foundation Young Investigator Award (1999), the Alfred Soffer Research Award (2000), election to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (2001), and the Fourth Eli Lilly and Company Distinguished Scholar award (2012-2015). He has also received multiple teaching awards and military honors from his service.

His research program has been consistently supported through clinical trials and quality improvement initiatives, with a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration.
