Dr. Marilyn Mitchell is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Society & Design, Bond University, specializing in visual communication and organizational leadership. She holds a PhD in Design from the University of Technology, Sydney (2006), with earlier degrees from Duke University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her career spans academia and industry, including roles at IBM and roles in technical documentation, training, and public relations. She researches visual communication theory, feminist film analysis, environmental media reporting, and interface design. Dr. Mitchell actively supervises PhD candidates in communication studies and has co-supervised a thesis on photojournalist culture. She serves on the editorial board of PRism Online PR Journal and as Secretary of the Australian and New Zealand Communication Association.
Her research interests include the visual representation of time in graphics, road signage efficacy, and gender dynamics in cinema. Notable work includes analyzing Australian media coverage of the Great Barrier Reef bleaching (2016) and exploring authentic leadership in illness blogs. Teaching focuses on organizational communication, intercultural training, and team dynamics. She advocates for productive learning cultures in higher education, particularly during remote teaching challenges posed by the pandemic.
Dr. Mitchell’s professional experience includes managing training programs for corporations like IBM and Pioneer Construction Materials, and directing the Communication Research Centre in Sydney. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges technical communication, media studies, and design theory. She has authored textbooks on communication skills for tourism and hospitality sectors and contributed to scholarly debates on digital media ethics and graphic design methodologies.
