Professor Marilyn Dumont is a poet, writer, and academic affiliated with the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts, Department of English and Film Studies. She holds a BA from the University of Alberta and an MFA from the University of British Columbia. Her research focuses on Métis literature, Indigenous women’s poetry, and cultural identity studies. Dumont has been honored with prestigious awards including the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award and Alberta Lieutenant Governor’s Distinguished Artist Award. She teaches courses such as Selected Topics in Indigenous Studies and Advanced Creative Writing: Poetry, emphasizing poetic techniques and Indigenous creative expression.
Her scholarly work includes landmark poetry collections like A Really Good Brown Girl and The Pemmican Eaters, which explore themes of colonial history, cultural resilience, and personal heritage. Dumont actively advises graduate students in creative theses focused on Indigenous literary themes. Her recent publications like South Side of a Kinless River continue to redefine Indigenous narratives in contemporary literature.
