Marilee Long is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Journalism & Media Communication at Colorado State University (CSU). She holds affiliations with the Colorado School of Public Health and the CSU Partnership for Air Quality, Climate, and Health. Her research focuses on health and science communication, including citizen science approaches to air quality awareness and media influences on science attitudes. She has led or co-led grants from the NIH, NSF, and the Colorado Tobacco Research Program.
Education: Ph.D. in Mass Communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Research Interests: Dr. Long explores how health messages drive behavioral change, particularly in wildfire smoke and ozone contexts. She also examines media portrayals of science and scientists, including gender/racial stereotypes in science TV programs and adolescent perceptions of science careers. Recent work emphasizes citizen science campaigns to engage communities in environmental health monitoring.
Publications: Over 20 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Science Communication, Journal of Health Communication, and Environmental Measurement Techniques, focusing on health communication, media effects, and science policy.
Awards: AAAS Fellow (2020+).
Grants & Leadership: Served as PI/co-PI on $2.3M+ in research funding. Her professional experience includes technical editing in aerospace and healthcare public affairs roles.
