Marijke Grau is a Privatdozent (PD) and research scientist at the German Sport University Cologne, affiliated with the Institute for Circulatory Research and Sports Medicine and the Department of Molecular and Cellular Sports Medicine. She holds a doctorate in Human Biology from RWTH Aachen University and a diploma in Biology from the University of Bremen. Her work contributes to Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
Research Interests: Her primary research areas include exercise physiology, hemorheology, erythrocyte deformability, nitric oxide metabolism, and the physiological impact of Long-COVID. She investigates how physical activity influences blood flow, red blood cell function, and fatigue, particularly in athletes and patients recovering from viral infections.
Recent Research Trends: Her latest publications focus on Long-COVID, examining how controlled exercise training improves fatigue and exercise capacity, and how red blood cell morphology affects hemorheological properties in patients. She also explores cardiovascular adaptations in extreme conditions, such as high-altitude simulation in individuals with Fontan circulation.
