Marija Drobnjaković, PhD in Geoscience and MSc in Spatial Planning, is a Research Fellow at the Geografski institut Jovan Cvijić within the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU). Her work bridges academic research with policy implementation, focusing on rural development and spatial sustainability.

Her research explores rural studies, spatial planning, and settlement geography, emphasizing the integration of rural communities into legislative frameworks. Current projects address decentralization models in Serbia's rural spaces, aiming to reduce spatial inequalities through administrative and functional reorganization.
She has presented at national and international conferences, conducted postdoctoral research at the Thuenen Institute (Germany), and published two monographs and numerous scientific papers. Her work critically examines Serbia's failed decentralization policies and proposes network-based models for rural-urban integration.
