Marie van der Merwe

Dr. Marie van der Merwe is an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for the Applied Physiology & Nutrition doctoral program at the University of Memphis' College of Health Sciences. Education:

• PhD in Molecular Pharmacology - University of Tennessee, Memphis (2007)
• BSc Hons in Biochemistry - University of Potchefstroom, South Africa (1998)

Her research program investigates regulatory immune mechanisms in two key areas: transplant immunology (developing tolerance after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation) and inflammation pathophysiology (particularly nutrient-imbalance driven inflammation). This dual focus bridges molecular pharmacology, cellular therapy, and metabolic health sciences.

As coordinator of the new Applied Physiology & Nutrition doctoral program, she plays a pivotal role in developing advanced graduate curriculum at the intersection of physiology, nutrition science, and clinical research methodologies.
