Marie-Luise Pitzl-Hagin is a Professor and Head of the Department of English Language Teaching and Learning Research at the Linz School of Education, Johannes Kepler University Linz. She also holds a position as Elise-Richter Research Fellow at the Austrian Center for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
Her research focuses on English as a lingua franca (ELF), particularly communication in Transient International Groups (TIGs), linguistic creativity, and corpus linguistics. She has established a micro-diachronic approach for analyzing spoken interaction in real-time contexts, combining corpus linguistics with conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis.
Pitzl-Hagin is principal investigator of the ELF in TIGs project (2019-2022) and the VOICE CLARIAH project (2020-2021), and was a key researcher in the VOICE (Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English) project. Her work examines how language changes in real-time interactions within multilingual professional contexts, with particular attention to emergent linguistic practices.

As an academic advisor and researcher, Pitzl-Hagin has secured significant funding from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), including an Elise-Richter Grant worth 280,497 € for the ELF in TIGs project and a CLARIAH-AT Grant of 36,800 € for the VOICE CLARIAH project. Her research has been instrumental in developing methodological frameworks for studying communication in transient multilingual contexts.
She is affiliated with research labs including the Austrian Centre of Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage and has been involved with the VOICE research group since 2005, contributing to one of the most significant corpora of spoken English as a lingua franca interactions.
