Marie Kveiborg is an Associate Professor and Group Leader at the Biotech Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC) at the University of Copenhagen, where she has been employed since 2017. She is affiliated with the Department of Biomedical Sciences within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.
Dr. Kveiborg received her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Aarhus University in 2000, following her Cand.Scient. degree from the same institution in 1998. Her academic journey includes postdoctoral fellowships at Yale University and at the Institute of Molecular Pathology at the University of Copenhagen before becoming an Assistant Professor in 2006 and advancing to Associate Professor in 2008.
Her research focuses on ADAM proteases (A Disintegrin and Metalloproteases) and their role in cell biology and disease, particularly cancer. She investigates how these transmembrane proteins interact with other cell surface molecules, influence growth factor receptor signaling, and contribute to tumor progression through processes like cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Her lab employs high-throughput screening approaches to identify novel ADAM substrates and interaction partners, complemented by biochemical analyses and murine disease models.
Dr. Kveiborg's recent publications (2019-2024) demonstrate a consistent research trajectory focused on ADAM proteases in cancer biology, with particular emphasis on how these enzymes regulate extracellular matrix remodeling, cell adhesion, and tumor microenvironment interactions. Her work spans multiple cancer types including colorectal, breast, and rectal cancers, with applications in understanding radiation response and metastatic processes.
- Young Investigator Award, Faculty of Health Sciences, Copenhagen University (2005)
- Young Investigator Award, the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (2002)
- Young Investigator Award, the European Calcified Tissues Society (1999)
As an educator, she leads molecular pathology courses for undergraduate and graduate students in molecular biomedicine and medicine, and has supervised numerous bachelor's, master's, and PhD students. She serves as a Handling Editor for Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) and participates in evaluation panels for organizations like the Norwegian Cancer Society. Her research is supported by grants from major Danish funding bodies including The Danish Medical Research Council, The Danish Cancer Society, The Novo Nordisk Foundation, and The Lundbeck Foundation, as well as several private foundations.
