Marie Carney

Professor Marie Carney is an esteemed academic and leader in nursing and midwifery, currently serving as Honorary Research Fellow at the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). She previously held the position of Associate Professor of Nursing and Midwifery and served as Dean of the Faculty from 2014 to 2016. Her academic journey also includes leadership roles at University College Dublin (UCD), where she was Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery. She is actively engaged as Visiting Professor to Nursing Homes Ireland (NHI) and Coordinator of the Advanced Nurse Practitioner Forum within the RCSI Hospital Group.

Her educational background includes a PhD in Strategic Management and an MBA, both from UCD, along with multiple postgraduate diplomas in nursing, ethics, research, and related disciplines. She is a Fellow of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at RCSI.

Marie Carney's research and teaching focus on Healthcare Management & Leadership, Advanced Nurse Practice, Integrated Care, and Nursing Education. Her work emphasizes strategic management, quality improvement, and human rights in older person care. She has led significant initiatives in developing national quality frameworks and self-appraisal toolkits for mental health services.

Her recent publications (2022–2025) reflect a consistent focus on integrated care models, nurse-led decision-making, leadership in advanced practice, and human rights in residential care. These works demonstrate a strong trend toward improving healthcare delivery for older adults through collaboration, policy development, and quality metrics.

Marie Carney leads impactful initiatives such as the Advanced Nurse Practitioner Forum, which evolved into the Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Advancement and Nursing Grand Rounds at Beaumont Hospital. These programs foster innovation, education, and interdisciplinary collaboration in clinical nursing practice.
