Maribel Dietz is an Associate Professor and Undergraduate Advisor in the Department of History at Louisiana State University (LSU), part of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences. She specializes in Late Antique and Early Medieval Mediterranean history, focusing on religion, culture, and society. Her research includes a book project on the Cult of Stephen the Protomartyr (400-900) and studies of ascetic travel and pilgrimage in the Mediterranean world.
Dr. Dietz holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley (1988), and M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University (1991 and 1997). She has taught courses on Western Civilization, Medieval history, and specialized topics like Pre-Modern Sport and Spectacle. She has also led LSU study abroad programs in Paris, Italy, and Ireland.
Her research interests emphasize religion and cultural exchange in the Mediterranean, with notable publications including Wandering Monks, Virgins, and Pilgrims (2005) and articles on Late Antique pilgrimage. Awards include the Tiger Athletic Foundation President’s Award for Teaching (2013), multiple Manship Summer Research Grants, and recognition for undergraduate instruction.
Dr. Dietz has directed research on religious figures like Constantine and Melania the Younger, and her work explores intersections of travel, sanctity, and identity in pre-modern societies. She advises students on theses related to religion and society in the Late Antique and Early Medieval Mediterranean.
