Marianne Schultzberg is a Professor of Clinical Neuroscience at the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Karolinska Institutet. She has been affiliated since 2005 and leads a research group focusing on neuroinflammation in Alzheimer’s disease, particularly investigating cytokines like interleukin-1 (IL-1) and pro-resolving mediators. Her work combines cellular and animal models with clinical collaborations to identify novel treatments.
Education:
- BSc in biochemistry (1974)
- PhD in neuropeptides (1980)
- Postdoc at University of Liverpool (1980–1981)
- Docent (associate professor) in 1983
Research Interests: Chronic neuroinflammation in Alzheimer’s, cytokine signaling, microglial activation, and translational approaches to neurodegenerative therapies. Her group studies IL-1 receptor modulation, pro-resolving lipid mediators, and β-amyloid clearance mechanisms.
Grants & Awards: Supported by the Swedish Research Council, Stockholm County Council, and others. Notable grants include Molecular Detail of Resolution of Inflammation in Alzheimer’s (2024–2026).
Labs/Teams: Neuroinflammation in Alzheimer Disease research group, collaborating on translational studies linking basic science to clinical applications.
